NATO at 75: Britain’s role in the alliance
Ahead of the 75th anniversary of NATO, we reflect on Britain's role in the organisation with Lord Robertson and AVM Fin Monahan
The Rt Hon. the Lord Robertson of Port Ellen KT is a member of the House of Lords who also served as the Secretary General of NATO from 1999 to 2003. Previously, Lord Robertson was a Member of Parliament, first entering the House of Commons in 1978 before becoming the Secretary of State for Defence from 1997 to 1999. During his time as the Secretary of State, he oversaw the Strategic Defence Review of 1998 which created the Joint Rapid Reaction Force and emphasised the government’s commitment to Defence. Lord Robertson has received numerous honours including 12 Honorary Doctorates and serves as a Senior Counsellor at the consulting firm the Cohen Group in Washington D.C.
