23 September at 14:30 18:00 BST

As part of the International Sea Power Conference (ISPC) 2025, the Council on Geostrategy is pleased to host our third official ISPC 2025 side event, held in partnership with the University of Gibraltar. The mini-conference is titled: ‘The future of international merchant shipping’, and will take place at the University of Gibraltar, Europa Campus.

The conference will host three panel sessions, each discussing a key area of international shipping and maritime security. Panel one will discuss ‘Sustainability and alternative fuels in merchant shipping’. It will discuss the importance of connecting research with practice to meet decarbonisation targets, the role of new green technologies and fuels in navigating the energy transition, and the challenges and opportunities for the bunkering sector.

The conference will also embrace the next generation of maritime thinkers, with a panel of sea cadets and students to provide the future seafarers’ perspective on the challenges and opportunities found within the merchant shipping industry.

Panel three will bring together established maritime experts to discuss ‘Building Skills for a Sustainable Maritime Future’. It will highlight the importance of collaboration in developing a stronger seafaring workforce, the geopolitical and strategic drivers of the skills demands in the maritime sector and the need to strengthen shore-side roles in the naval sector.
