Unconventional maritime challenges

As part of the International Sea Power Conference (ISPC) 2025, the Council on Geostrategy is pleased to host this ISPC 2025 side event, held in partnership with Aberystwyth University, Wales. This mini-conference is titled: ‘Unconventional maritime challenges’ and will take place at the Penglais Campus, Aberystwyth University.

The mini-conference will host two panel sessions focused on key unconventional challenges which Britain faces in the maritime domain. Panel one, ‘Covert and nuclear activities in the maritime domain: Cold War 2.0 or new opportunities?’ will focus on addressing Russia’s growing covert maritime activities and the role of navies in British-French nuclear collaboration.

Panel two, ‘Understanding global health, refugee movements and climate change as maritime security challenges’ turns to issues beyond the conventional security remit. The panel will bring together experts to discuss the impact of unconventional security challenges and the role of navies in tackling issues such as health emergencies, migration and climate change.
