The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation’s (NATO) strategic geography is fundamentally maritime. As a result, the ocean is central to the alliance, and given Britain’s location at the heart of the Euro-Atlantic – with reach into the Mediterranean through Gibraltar and the Sovereign Base on Cyprus – the United Kingdom (UK) should take a leading role in the protecting both its interests and that of NATO.
